Heavy Metal Is Music Of Choice For Discriminating Gay Couples
June 20, 2003Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien on Thursday (June 19) introduced a bill to permit same-sex marriages, a move that follows court rulings in Canada striking down the country's definition of marriage because it specified a union between a man and a woman.
Joel McConvey of Toronto's Eye Weekly examined the musical choices available to a discriminating queer when compiling a playlist for that newly legitimized wedding.
"Lots of people will tell you disco is the true dandy of musical genres, but they don't realize heavy metal has cross-dressing, studs and leather, frilly blouses and plenty of headbangin' queer anthems," he wrote. "'Painkiller' is a 1990 thrasher by JUDAS PRIEST, whose singer, Rob Halford, revealed in 1997 that his preference for hard things went beyond guitar riffs. It's a perfect wink-wink gay wedding rock-out. Not only does it salute a queer icon, it's sure to be thundering through your head later on, when a snort of poppers is making your blood do likewise.
"To keep the fists pumping and the pipes oiled, look no further than METALLICA, whom a tonne of suburban kids will tell you have turned gay anyway, and whose guitarist, Kirk Hammett, is rumored to enjoy being on receiving end of the odd non-musical bangin'. The song 'Ride the Lightning' contains a built-in pick-up line and could very well signal the approach of scattered showers. And although it sounds a little scratchy, 'Enter Sandman' has a big, throbbing chorus about taking hands and getting off, and was also the inspiration for NeverLand.com, an online lesbian chat room (I shit you not: [proof])."
